SURAT: The situation turned tense at P P Savani School, Hirabaug, when a group of men from
Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) with saffron scarves around their neck reached to oppose a group of class IX girl students appearing in talent search test (TST) on Tuesday.
The police reached the spot and detained 12 persons. They were later released.
VHP leaders met the school principal and demanded that Hijab or burqa should not be allowed in the school.
However, before the situation could go out of control, the police reached the spot and detained the protesters who refused to leave the school premises.
The TST was organised by the education department and it started at 9 am on Tuesday. Local residents noticed a group of students wearing burqas arriving in a car and entering the school premises.
As the local residents gathered near the school gate to protest, workers from the VHP also reached the spot.
Nilesh Akbari, vice president of VHP Surat, said, “Few people are trying to make a Shaheen Bagh in Gujarat and we will not tolerate such acts. We did not create disturbance and expressed our concerns by meeting the school principal."
